Manage content has three sections that control request types. It's important to understand that these aren't three versions of the same setting — each governs a different situation.
1. Disable request types for Patients
Who it affects: Patients submitting requests themselves in the patient app.
What it does: Turns specific request types off for patients. If you disable a type, patients can't submit it until you re-enable it.
Covers: Admin and Medical request types (e.g. fit note, prescription, general medical).
Use this when: You want to stop patients from using certain request types entirely.
2. Clinical proxy request access
Who it affects: Practice staff submitting on a patient's behalf, via Create request on the Dashboard (or Patient Search).
What it does: Chooses which medical request types staff can use when creating a proxy request. This is an allow list, not a block list.
Default: General medical assessment and admin are on by default.
Use this when: You want to limit what staff can submit for patients — for example, only certain modules during proxy requests.
Note: Clinical proxy can bypass normal limits if that's enabled under Access and request limits.
3. Routine-only mode request types
Who it affects: Patients, but only when the practice is in routine-only mode.
When that happens: The daily limit is reached, or the routine cutoff time has passed (if configured in Access and request limits).
What it does: Chooses which medical request types patients can still submit — for ongoing problems only. Patients must pass a screening question ("Is this an ongoing problem…?") and acknowledge they can wait.
Use this when: You want to keep accepting routine follow-ups at capacity, without opening the door to new or urgent problems.
Note: You must keep at least one routine type selected. Anima marks recommended defaults with (Default).
Quick comparison
Section | Submitted by | Effect | Typical purpose |
Patients | Patient in app | Disable types | Turn off requests you don't want patients to use |
Clinical proxy | Staff via Create request | Allow types for staff | Control what staff can submit on behalf of patients |
Routine-only | Patient in app (at capacity/cutoff) | Allow routine types only | Keep accepting ongoing issues when limits are hit |

Above these three sections, you can edit the welcome and exit messages shown for all requests. If routine mode is enabled, you can also edit the routine screening question and the acknowledgement statement here.
Not sure which section to use? Think about what you're trying to achieve — for example, "stop fit notes at capacity but still allow staff to create them" — and match it to the relevant section above.
