To get the most out of Anima's document processing, most (if not all) of your documents can be redirected from EMIS straight into Anima.
To do this, you'll need to apply for a new MESH mailbox so Anima can receive documents directly from senders without them going through EMIS first. This guide walks you through each step, and we'll help you along the way.
Overview
There are three steps to setting up MESH with Anima:
Apply for a new MESH mailbox via NHS England — they'll send you a mailbox ID
Add the MESH mailbox ID details into Anima
Raise a request with the National Service Desk to turn on redirect rules
Step 1: Apply for a new MESH mailbox
Your practice will likely already have a MESH mailbox linked to EMIS. To receive documents directly into Anima, you'll need a new one.

Once the form is complete, click Send form to submit it. NHS England will email you your new mailbox ID. They will also send the mailbox ID and password to Anima.
Step 2: Add MESH details into Anima
Once you have your MESH mailbox ID and password from NHS England, you'll also need your existing EMIS Mailbox ID.
Find your EMIS Mailbox ID
Open EMIS
Click the EMIS bubble (top left) → Workflow → Workflow Manager
Click the Settings / Config icon
Navigate to Mailbox > Mailboxes
Click Edit on the relevant mailbox (this allows you to copy the ID)
Copy the Mailbox ID
Important: do not change the ID, just copy it.
Enter the details in Anima
Log in to Anima
Go to Settings > Organisation Settings > MESH Ingestion
Toggle on MESH ingestion
In the first two boxes, enter the Mailbox ID the NHS sent you following Step 1 (Anima will input the password)
In the third box (EMIS Mailbox ID), paste the Mailbox ID you copied from EMIS
Click Save changes
Step 3: Turn on redirect rules
The final step is to get the NHS England team to set up a series of redirect rules for your workflow IDs, which routes your documents from EMIS into Anima.
Note: you can only complete this step once you have received your MESH mailbox credentials from the NHSE team. If you're not sure whether you've received them, reach out to the Anima team and we can check for you.
Raising a request with the National Service Desk
Email the National Service Desk at [email protected] using the template below.
Before sending, make sure to update:
Your new mailbox ID and mailbox name
Your go-live date
Your name, practice name, and ODS code
